Reboot Communications Refactors Vancouver Game Conventions

Reboot Communications has been hosting events  Vancouver International Games Summit  and Game Developer’s Conference since 2007, but this year, they have cancelled plans to hold more events in Vancouver. In two weeks they will be organizing the Canadian Video Game awards at Fan Expo Vancouver. Apparently they were offering free admission to unemployed game developers to boost their attendance numbers.

I can’t believe that events like this are having trouble when even small events like the Vancouver Retro Gaming Expo was breaking fire codes. Pro Conventions are great, but when you have that kind of energy coming from the fan community, is there no way you can harness that?

Penny Arcade Adventures 3 is Reborn

Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness was all but cancelled at PAX East 2010. Flagging sales and  a long, painful “he said, she said” rift between Penny Arcade and the developer, Hothead had sealed the series from any future instalments. But now, a 3rd episode is finally on the horizon by way of Cthulhu Saves the World developer Zeboyd games. The dynamic Duo of Bill Stiernberg and Robert Boyd have teamed up with Penny Arcade’s Jeff Kalles to create a retro RPG adventure using a combination of Final Fantasy V‘s graphics and Grandia‘s combat system. The new game will be available over Steam, iOS, Google Play and (sigh) Xbox live Indie Channel for $2.99 this summer.

Oni Press Takes Over As Publisher of ‘Penny Arcade’ Print Books

Penny Arcade announced at the Emerald City Comicon that it would be switching over to Oni Press from Dark Horse for their 8th print volume, “Magical Kids in Danger”. From the Press Release:

“This was a no-brainer for us,” said Oni Press publisher Joe Nozemack. “The guys at Penny Arcade are driven by the same rebellious desire to create that led to our starting Oni Press. We emerged from the same zeitgeist. The first Oni Press comic was published at the end of 1997, and Penny Arcade hit the web in 1998. We aren’t just peers, we come from the same graduating class.”

The new volume will be released August 29, 2012 for $14.99.

No Demo For Prototype 2

Radical Entertainment has confirmed over twitter that Prototype 2 will not be getting a demo over PSN or XBLA:

@john1451 No demo – the game is just too big to share 1 tiny chunk. April 24th is just around the corner though, have you pre-ordered?

So no love for those who want to try before they buy. But really, if you know what Prototype 2 is and you’re excited about it – Does this really affect your probability of buying it?

Xbox 360 now more Media Machine than Game Console

Statistics have confirmed what we’ve all suspected: Over 50% of the 84 hours a month people spend on Xbox live is spent using media apps like Netflix and Hulu. It seems that Microsoft has succeeded in its “Trojan Horse” strategy of turning the Xbox into a digital hub for every medium in the house. Xbox already has Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, ESPN, MLB.tv, and Disney XD on the console. The addition of HBO Go was another plus for the Xbox, since you could previously only get the service on Roku Box. Coupled with the fact that video stores are going out of business everywhere, consumers are now being forced to RTFM and jury-rig their video game boxes into the Media hub they were meant to be.
