Valve Teaming up with Overkill Software for Non-Half-Life 3 Goodness

Sweden’s Overkill Software, creators of Payday: The Heist are teaming up with Valve Software for a new FPS project. Details are scant, but the new game appears to be a cross-over between Left 4 Dead and Overkill’s respected Bank Robbing Shooter. Could we be robbing banks after a Zombie Apocalypse for useless paper? If it’s the undead guarding lost treasure, it sounds like Dungeons and Dragons transplanted to the modern age which…sounds pretty cool actually! Details of the project will likely arise at E3.

Bungie co-founder Alex Seropian’s mobile dev teams up with Unreal Engine

New details have emerged about Industrial Toys, the mobile game developer created by Bungie co-founder Alex Seropian. It seems that the company has signed a multi-title deal with Epic Games to use their Unreal Engine, which was used to great success in the Infinity Blade series. Industrial Toys is billing itself as a core gaming company, so it’s not likely your going to see just another Popcap or Zynga clone from them in the near future.

Vancouver Developer hits 200k downloads with Pandemic 2.5

Pandemic 2.5, the global disease simulator for iOS, is currently #3 on the iTunes charts behind Draw Something and Angry Birds In Space. It was developed by Dark Realm Studios, a new company with only one employee, BCIT Grad Dan Archibald.

“I’m definitely proud, it has surpassed all my expectations,” admitted Archibald. “When I was working on the game I’d daydream and think it would be amazing if the game hit 100,000 downloads. It’s been two weeks and has already reached far larger and wider than I could have imagined.”

Dan plans to build on his game’s success. In the future, he wants to start his own physical studio and hiring more developers to make Pandemic the best that it can be.

Blizzard Entertainment and Valve Software End DOTA Dispute

Blizzard has issued a statement that they have come to an agreement with Valve regarding the trademark of DOTA (Defense of the Ancients). Under the new terms, Blizzard may use the name for its non-commercial modifications, and Valve will continue to develop DOTA 2. It’s a relief to see two great companies come together like this. I have a feeling that  if this was the movie industry, they would have to fight to the bitter end.

Gamestop kneels before Gabe and sells Steam Gift Cards

The press release says that Gamestop “thrilled to be partnering with Valve on this new initiative,” but we all know what’s going on here. Gamestop has made an agreement with Valve to start selling gift vouchers for the Steam PC download service in their stores across North America. The last video store in my town is just about to shutter, and its pretty clear that Gamestop will soon follow suit. They say that they are going to make a transition from software sales to refurbished hardware, but if you ask me, the future of retail is the face-to-face community surrounding their stores. Considering Gamestop’s relationship with the gaming community, it’s clear that the future is not for them.

Vancouver Is Getting a Gamer Bar!

Vancouver’s Video Game industry has driven many people to drink, but now it can have a watering hole of its very own. Industry Alumni Brian Vidovic, Azlan Mustapha and Julianna Kolakis have poured $250,000 worth of their life savings to forge a solid ingot of a great night out for gamers called the EXP bar. You can play free console games as you drink and eat food that has been optimized to keep your hands grease-free for gaming!

Vancouver needs a place like this. This seems a lot like the Arcade night club I helped set up for CanSec West, and let me tell you, it was the greatest. The networking was easy, everyone was so relaxed, and they had little pulled pork sandwiches on a stick. One the largest complaints I hear about making video games in Vancouver is the lack of camaraderie among professionals. Great things are going to come from the EXP bar. You won’t just get good drinks and appetizers, you might see the next great gaming company march out of their doors.

If you look at their rewards list, even the $10 level gets you a free appetizer. You have NO REASON not to donate to this crowdfund. Buy yourself some dinner and create the future of gaming today!

Paul Christoforo Sues N-Control

A new chapter has opened in the Ocean Marketing Saga. You may remember Paul Christoforo as the man who thought it would be a great idea to physically threaten the creators and staff at Penny Arcade because they exposed his less than admirable treatment of customers waiting for the Avenger controller for gamers with disabilities. Christoforo, now in need of a gig, has filed a lawsuit against N-Control, makers of the Avenger, for defamation of character. The following is a quote from his letter to Kotaku:

The grounds are defamation of Character telling lies about me my company and preventing me from making a living by lying about things that never happened and I plan on going after other people too esp .coms who printed the lies and did not retract after i asked nicely. Breach of contract for them not paying me an undisclosed sum of money Due to me at the time we parted ways and a few other things named in the lawsuit.

The question is, after all he’s said and done, after saying things like “Son Im 38 I wwebsite as on the internet when you were a sperm in your daddys balls.”, and after not possessing the google or grammar skills to figure out who he was dealing with? how could anyone possibly add anything to that lexicon that would count as defamation of character?
