Sakura-Con Releases 15th anniversary plush

2012 marks Sakura-con’s 15th anniversary, and they’ve decided to mark the occasion by releasing a commemorative plush! Hokusai the Narwhal is designed by Speckled Owl Studio and is based on this year’s winning Mascot design. This huggable Jedi of the Sea will be available at the Sakura-con Merchandise Booth on the 4th floor of the Washington Convention Center.  A heftier version of the plush will be auctioned off over the course of the convention with all proceeds benefitting the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Xbox Live Indie Games Coming to Windows Phone, Sort of.

To promote Indie games on Xbox Live Arcade, a group of independent game developers have taken matters into their own hands. They’re releasing an app called XBLIG Companion, which scours the RSS feed from XboxIndies.com. Users can then use the phone’s integration with Xbox 360 to buy and download the games to their console. Kudos to the developers for showing initiative, but with the way Microsoft has been treating the indie channel, it might be a better idea just to develop for Windows phone 7 directly.

Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome Update

TVWise has uncovered some new details on the Battlestar Galactica prequel, Blood & Chrome. The Visual Effects for the 2 hour pilot were delivered last October, but Syfy is now mulling over whether to make the pilot into a full series. If the series is picked up, the network might hold onto it and release it as a first episode. One way or the other, this pilot will be released to viewers. I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m hoping this turns into a series. Forget Star Trek or Stargate, we are living in a future where you can’t even see spaceships on television. Does that sound like a world you want to live in?

Mass Effect 3 Shows Vancouver 176 Years in the Future

Vancity Buzz has collected a number of screenshots that depict Vancouver as part of a futuristic megacity that’s amalgamated with Seattle. In this screenshot you can clearly see the Vancouver Convention center as Commander Shepard awaits his trial at the hands of the Human Systems Alliance. In the new trailer, we can see Burrard inlet being savaged by Reaver invaders. I love how you can still make out the suburbs around the bottom of the North Shore mountains. Too many futuristic cities are designed with 100% urbanization in mind, and that is completely at odds with the culture here in Lotus Land. And with all these aliens bringing the property values down, we can hope for a future when our great grandchildren finally, finally can afford 900 square feet in the West End. The rest of the screenshots can be found here and here.

Dear Esther Makes its Money Back in a Few Hours

The Success of the story driven first-person game Dear Esther proves that it’s not all doom and gloom for the indie game scene. Developed by UK developer thechineseroom, Dear Esther tells the story of “A deserted island… a lost man… memories of a fatal crash… a book written by a dying explorer.”

Locations on the island are randomized, so each playthrough is different. The $9.99 game made back its $55,000 investment within a few hours of its release on the Steam store. The game’s ad on the Steam website looks more like a mystery/romance novel than a video game. This disproves so much conventional wisdom about what it takes to make a successful indie game that other so-called “indie” platforms should stand up and take notice.

‘Arrow’ Adds Colin Donnell as Tommy Merlyn

CW’s The Arrow just updated its cast list today to include Colin Donnell as title hero’s best friend Tommy Merlyn. In this incarnation, Merlyn is one of Oliver Queen’s fellow “trustafarian” friends from his past, but notices that Oliver returns to the city a changed man. Whether that Tommy will become the Green Arrow’s arch-rival Merlyn in this series remains to be seen.

Penny Arcade takes a tour of Valve Software and Interviews Gabe Newell

The folks at Penny Arcade have launcheed their own news site, The Penny Arcade Report last week. For their first feature, they’ve taken a tour of Valve Software’s offices in Redmond and interviewed CEO Gabe Newell on the company’s culture and its plans for the future. One bombshell from the interview is Valve’s plans to foray into selling it’s own hardware and console systems.

Well, if we have to sell hardware we will. We have no reason to believe we’re any good at it, it’s more we think that we need to continue to have innovation and if the only way to get these kind of projects started is by us going and developing and selling the hardware directly then that’s what we’ll do. It’s definitely not the first thought that crosses our mind; we’d rather hardware people that are good at manufacturing and distributing hardware do that. We think it’s important enough that if that’s what we end up having to do then that’s what we end up having to do. -Gabe Newell
